Ignition Lock Repair
The key turned the engine off in the driveway and now refuses to come back out.
In plain words
Winters here add road grit, salt and moisture to the list of things an ignition barrel deals with, on top of ordinary wear from years of daily use. A barrel that has gone stiff or gritty through a cold, slushy season is cleaned, serviced and lubricated rather than simply forced, and the fix holds up through the next stretch of the same weather.
How the visit goesThe new key from the hardware counter fits the door but stops halfway into the ignition slot, no matter how it is angled or how gently it is pushed. A worn original key opened this same slot without trouble for years.

How the visit goes

Checking the switch positions and the steering lock
Behind the part of the ignition a key touches sits an electrical switch with its own positions, off, accessory, on and start, and a mechanical steering lock that engages when the key is removed. The locksmith checks how the barrel behaves at each stop: whether it reaches start cleanly, whether the wheel locks and releases as it should, and whether the transition back to accessory is smooth. A fault confined to one position often narrows the cause before any part comes off the vehicle.
Cutting and matching new keys
New keys are cut from the fresh pinning rather than copied from a worn original, so they engage the wafers cleanly from the first use. Where the vehicle's doors and trunk already share the ignition's key, those cylinders are brought into the same pattern so a single key continues to operate every lock on the vehicle. Each new key is tested in the ignition and in every other lock before the visit ends.
When an electronic step still remains
If the assessment turned up a separate immobilizer, transponder or wiring question alongside the mechanical repair, you leave knowing exactly what that remaining piece is and who is equipped to finish it, an automotive locksmith, a dealer or an automotive electrical specialist, rather than it being quietly left unresolved. The mechanical side of the ignition is finished and tested; the electronic side is named clearly so it can be booked on its own separate terms.

Ignition Lock Repair
What affects the quote
Vehicle make, model and column design
How the ignition assembly is built varies by vehicle, a simple housing reached with a few steps, or a column locked down with shear bolts and trim that has to come off carefully. That difference in access shapes how much time the repair takes.
Confirming ownership on a recently purchased vehicle
A vehicle bought used, with incomplete paperwork or an unclear ownership history, takes a little longer to verify before any work begins, compared with a vehicle whose registration and owner are already on file.
Keying other locks to match
Bringing the doors and trunk onto a newly pinned ignition key, so one key runs the whole vehicle again, is separate work from the ignition repair itself, even when it happens during the same visit.
What to have ready
- Has this ignition been serviced or replaced before?
- Would you like extra keys cut during the same visit?
- Does the key insert, turn partway, or not turn at all?
Ignition Lock Repair: questions
QuestionsIs my vehicle's security system disabled while this work is happening?
No part of the vehicle's electronic security system is bypassed or defeated as part of a mechanical ignition repair. The locksmith works on the physical cylinder and its housing, and any question involving the immobilizer or transponder system is identified and referred rather than worked around, so the vehicle's built-in protection stays exactly as it was designed to work.
How many keys will I leave with?
That depends on what you ask for and what the vehicle already has. A single working key is enough to drive away, but most people ask for at least one spare cut and tested at the same time, especially if the visit started because the only working key had worn down badly or snapped off inside the ignition altogether.
What information should I have ready when I call?
The vehicle's year, make and model, and exactly what the key does: whether it inserts, turns, engages anything, or is stuck. Mention whether a spare key exists, whether anything has already been tried on the lock, and whether the vehicle's warning lights or dash behave normally otherwise. Having the vehicle permit or registration nearby helps the ownership check move along smoothly.
